Imagine

This series consists of a total of seven images. The series primarily deals with issues of perception, identity and conceptions of beauty. As humans we depend heavily on our vision as a means of identifying most of the things in our lives, especially people. My intention with this series was to question that, to find other ways to represent a person without their face being the primary focus.

In order to achieve this I removed the faces from all of my subjects and instead chose to focus on the details in hands, the positioning, and the stories that can be told through them. In removing the faces from the figures I also removed the ability for viewers to look at the images and think to themselves “that’s a painting of a pretty girl”. Instead I present 7 faceless portraits, all of different skin tones, all emitting different energies, some seemingly more gendered than others. The lack of facial features allows the face to serve as a blank canvas, a mirror in which people are allowed to see themselves reflected in my artwork.

The choice of colors used in these pieces was derived from a minimalistic approach to color, using only the primary colors and seeing how adjusting their value and the use of overlapping could be used in an endless amount of ways.
